General Information

More than half of the Soldiers assigned to the Vicenza area, who are not in barracks, live in housing on the Italian economy, either in Vicenza or in neighboring communities. For this reason, housing officials strongly recommend shipping a vehicle early enough to have it available upon arrival in Vicenza. All private rentals and all government family housing are located off of Caserma Ederle.

The housing office lists almost 1695 private rental units, 330 government leased units, and 255 government owned units in the area. Barracks are available for unaccompanied E1 through E4, however, there is limited space on post for E5 and E6. Almost half of Soldiers reside in private rental housing.

Service members cannot be placed on the waiting list prior to their arrival in Vicenza.  Once they in-process at housing, their eligibility date on the waiting list will be adjusted according to the date they departed their previous duty station.

Italian homes are generally smaller than homes built to U.S. standards and do not include built in closets. Some representative floor plans for economy quarters are included on this website to give you an idea of what you may find.

Recycling

There are many challenges to face when moving to a new or different country. For Americans living on the economy in the Vicenza area, one of these challenges may be trying to figure out just how to get rid of their trash.

Getting used to the fact that in Italy everyone is required by law to recycle certain items is also a challenge. The housing office put together this page to provide some information to help in these areas.

On Feb. 5, 1997, the Italian legislature published regulations concerning garbage disposal reform throughout Italy. This new legislature follows the European community's directives concerning recycling; while at the same time is modernizing the methods of garbage utilization. The main issue of the regulations is not the disposal of garbage but its separation before disposal, recycling or re-use.

In Italy, each town hall has been delegated responsibility to implement the new system for recycling based on a classification of garbage, which is now divided into several categories. Unfortunately each town hall has developed its own system.

For details about your specific community, or questions about waste disposal and recycling, call the housing office at 634-8574.
